I run evening classes, half days sessions, full day workshops and painting holidays. The classes take place regularly at the studio, here in Horncastle, with events further afield that are arranged specially to suit individual groups. The classes are suitable for all - no matter what your painting experience, but a workshop day is a particularly good place for absolute beginners to start - a day where a complete painting is demonstrated in "bite-sized" pieces to lead you gently through your first torture sessions!

Workshops

On drawing days, from 10.30am to 4pm, the emphasis is likely to be on composition, perspective and tonal values. Working from life models, still life arrangements and photos, we will all learn to sketch our own composition - precisely or creatively. Planning and drawing takes time, so sometimes a completed tonal drawing will be worked up into a finished painting during another session, or we might get as far through the painting stages as time allows.

On painting days, from 10.30am to 4pm, you will be encouraged to use one of my compositions to speed up the drawing process, and so leave as much time as possible in the day for actual painting. Once the drawing is on, I paint a bit, then you paint a bit and the painting builds up in "bite-sized" stages until complete. Your painting will not be an "original", but you will be encouraged to paint freely, and will always end up with your own version - not a paint by numbers copy! The aim is to improve your techniques, widen your experience and increase your confidence in handling the medium. These days are also well suited to those wishing to try a new medium - painting principals may well be the same, but handling techniques vary enormously!

For the more experienced, these can develop nicely into D.I.Y. days where you can produce "original" works with helpful(?) suggestions from me. This D.I.Y. approach is especially useful where you wish to exhibit and sell your paintings.

All workshop days run from 10.30am to 4pm. Please try to arrive up to 15 minutes early to get settled and grab the important first cup of coffee! Tea and coffee will be provided, but bring a packed lunch - I might share my paints, but you don't get my sandwiches!

Cost for each day is £22 plus paper / material costs - usually £3

These workshop days can be designed to suit your art group, here at the studio, or in your local hall - please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Half Days

Morning - 9.30am to 12.30pm     Afternoon 1.00pm  to 4.00pm   or stay all day!

Half days are alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays, A morning or afternoon session costs £11 plus paper / materials.  For the crazy (sorry...) keen among you, staying on for a full day session is also a great plan - just ask!

A morning or an afternoon session here at High Meadow, run in a similar way to the evening classes - a chance to catch up on previous "workshop titles" that you have missed, or better still, a chance to attempt your own original work. These sessions are well suited to those with some experience of their chosen medium. There are always a wide variety of subjects and mediums in use, with my interference and little demonstrations where necessary.  Play in watercolour, pastel, acrylic, ink, pencil, charcoal..... or a mixture......

Evening Classes

Held here at High Meadow on Monday and Thursday evenings. Like the half day sessions, these classes provide a chance for me to help you to do your own thing, or perhaps for you to work through workshop titles from the huge selection of past paintings. We do not have a "term" of classes but prefer you to pay as you play - but PLEASE try hard to let us know when you will not be able to attend; there is often a waiting list and it would be nice to run sensible sized classes without huge fluctuations in numbers.

Evening classes run from 6.30pm to 9pm and cost £10 plus paper / materials

Painting Holidays

In the past, we have enjoyed painting breaks to parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. We have also braved the English Channel on many occasions and painted in France, Belgium and as far across Europe as Switzerland. The emphasis is always on the fun of painting outside, learning to brave the elements (and the "interested" passers by!) For up to date information regarding any future holiday plans, please keep an eye on the news page.
